Social Security Recipients Get a 2.5% Benefit Increase in 2025

More than 72.5 million Americans receive Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments each month. The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced these recipients will see a 2.5% increase cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase to their payments beginning on December 31, 2024. These alterations help beneficiaries with living costs and overall inflation.

In 2024, beneficiaries received a 3.2% COLA increase. While, this year is not as large of a percentage, the average monthly $1,927 benefit will now rise to $1,976. The earnings limit for workers who are younger than “full” retirement age (see Full Retirement Age Chart) will increase to $23,400, while the earnings limit for people reaching their “full” retirement age in 2025 will increase to $62,160.

“Social Security benefits and SSI payments will increase in 2025, helping tens of millions of people keep up with expenses even as inflation has started to cool,” said Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of Social Security.

COLA Notices

In early December, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out safe and secure COLA notices each year, which are available online to most beneficiaries in the Message Center of their my Social Security account.

This year is the first time most Social Security beneficiaries will receive a newly designed and improved COLA notice,  making it easier for recipients to find the information they need most. The simplified COLA notice is now only one page, uses plain and personalized language, and provides exact dates and dollar amounts of a person’s new benefit amount and any deductions.

You can now choose how you want to receive available notices when you sign in or create a my Social Security account: email only, text message only, or both text message and email.

The 2025 COLA adjustment is a significant update for those receiving disability benefits, offering necessary support as the COLA rises with inflation.
