Changes to Social Security Login go into Effect for Benefit Recipients Soon

The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently sent out an email to roughly 46 million people that created an online account before September 18, 2021. Some recipients thought this may have been SPAM, but changes to the Social Security’s online system are in fact changing.

For customers to maintain access to their online account they will have to switch to a Login.gov account. According to the agency, simplifying the log-in experience and aligning with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to online services is the reason for the change.

my Social Security is a safe and secure way for people to do business with us,” said Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley. “We’re excited to transition to Login.gov to access our online services, streamlining the process and ease of use for the public across agencies.”

Regardless of whether an individual is receiving benefits, the my Social Security accounts are free and offer personalized tools to anyone over 18 years of age with a social security number. The service allows users apply for and manage benefits, as well as enable them to estimate future benefits and request replacement Social Security cards.

You can also choose to receive available notices online instead of by mail and get alerts by email or text when you have a notice available. Getting available notices online means not needing to wait for it to arrive in the mail or the notice getting lost, misplaced or stolen.

So far, more than 6 million account users have already made the conversion, which is abundant considering there has not been a final deadline announced for these legacy accounts to make the transition.

The Login.gov service is already used by other government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, Small Business Administration and the Office of Personal Management.

How to Update Your Login

If you are an Existing Login.gov or ID.me account holder, you do not need to create a new account or take any other action. However, if a user does not currently use Login.gov, moving over an account can be easily done when logging into my Social Security.

  1. Log in on the my Social Security website with your username and password as usual.
  2. Users with soon-to-be outdated accounts will be given an option to transfer over to the Login.gov system.
  3. Set up a second authentication method.
  4. Once your account is linked, a confirmation message will be shown, and your Login.gov credentials can be used to sign in to my Social Security in the future.

Benefits of the New System

Decrease in wait times. The SSA anticipates the new approach will help address lengthy wait times for callers to its 800 number, which in April averaged about 24 minutes, down from 42 minutes in November, according to the agency.

Security measures will be increased. Since the federal government runs Login.gov, authentication of the identity of online account holders is protected.

Accounts are free and assist with many tasks. Even if you are decades away from retirement, creating a Social Security account is a great idea to estimate future benefits, track your earnings history that will need to be accessible later, or help you replace a Social Security card if needed.
